Dr. Lee served as co-principal investigator on the development of the herbal remedy HLXL for treating osteoarthritis. Dr. Lee received an institutional development award in 1985, has published 110 papers and holds 15 US and international patents.

Prof. Alvaro Viljoen obtained his Ph.D. (1999) on the secondary metabolites of the genus Aloe from the University of Johannesburg. He identified medicinal aromatic plants as a potential research opportunity, especially in South Africa. His commitment to phytomedicine research was recently acknowledged through the 2013 TWAS-ROSSA Award from The World Academy of Sciences. He has contributed to 185 peer-reviewed papers, mostly on aspects of medicinal plant research. The highlight of his academic career has been his nomination for a National Research Chair in Phytomedicine, which was awarded by the NRF/DST in 2013, a position he holds concurrently as Director of the recently awarded MRC Herbal Drugs Research Unit in South Africa.
