Ethical Guidelines for New Editors

The Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) serves as a fundamental resource for the ethical and practical implementation of publication guidelines, providing valuable support and guidance to its members. As a non-statutory advisory body, COPE plays a crucial role in shaping contemporary discourse by offering a professional voice in publishing ethics.

Committed to educating and supporting editors, publishers, and editorial teams, COPE aims to integrate ethical practices into the publishing culture. Our approach is consistent with COPE’s efforts to promote ethical practices in publishing through education, training, and implementing international best practices.

Bentham Science recommends that all new editors carefully review COPE’s Guide to Ethical Editing for New Editors and the guidelines on sharing information among Editors-in-Chief (EiCs). This brief yet comprehensive document provides readily accessible guidance on ethical practices, outlining quality control measures, audits, and professional standards for new editors. It also helps them establish and maintain collaborative relationships with other editors and editorial board members while adopting an organized approach to journal management.

COPE also offers extensive resources on publication ethics, including its Core Practices, Flowcharts, and Case Studies. All of these are available on the COPE website. Bentham Science expects its editorial staff and editors to strictly adhere to COPE’s guidelines in order to maintain compliance with the Principles of Transparency and Best Practice in Scholarly Publishing.
