Prof. Vittorio Calabrese is Director of School of Clinical Pathology and Clinical Biochemistry, University of Catania, University of Messina and University of Palermo. He is Professor of Clinical Biochemistry at the School of Medicine and Surgery, University of Catania. Member of the Editorial Board of several high peer reviewed journals his research focuses on the role of free radicals and antioxidants in human disease, particularly Alzheimer's disease and other brain disorders. The results of his researches have been reported in over 160 scientific papers published in outstanding international journals and widely cited (around 8500 total citations, around 5000 citations of the 10 most cited articles), for an HI value of 57 (ISI). He has deposited one patent (Nr. WO 2004/07883 A1 of 10.9.2004) for the use of curcumin and its derivatives in the treatment neurodegenerative disorders.

Katia Del Rio-Tsonis obtained her BS from the University of California San Diego and her PhD
from the National University of Mexico. She is currently a Professor in the Department of Biology
at Miami University where she has been since 1999. She has concentrated her research efforts to
understand the molecular and cellular mechanisms involved in the process of lens and retina
regeneration. Several animal models are used in her lab, including the embryonic chick and
amphibians such as newts and frogs. Using these animal models, the focus is to determine the
mechanism of cellular reprograming and stem cell activation.

Prof. Patrizia Ferretti studied at Pisa University and the Mario Negri Institute for Pharmacological Research, Milan, Italy, prior to moving to the Max-Planck-Institute, Goettingen, Germany, and then to London, UK, initially as a postdoc and then as a group leader. She has a long-standing interest in mechanisms governing tissue regeneration within the context of normal and abnormal development of the nervous system and craniofacial structures. She has made a sustained and internationally recognized contribution to the regeneration field. Current focus is on plasticity and differentiation potential of human stem cells, mechanisms modulating it, and development of new approaches to repair damaged or diseased human tissues.

Prof. Leker is the director of the stroke unit at Hadassah. Graduated from the Hebrew University Medical School in 1987 and completed his residency in Neurology at Hadassah-Hebrew University Medical Center in Jerusalem Israel. He established the Cerebrovascular Research laboratory at Hadassah in 1996. Prof. Leker moved to the US in 2002 to the NIH as a staff scientist and studied stem cell biology and use of neural stem cells as novel therapy for stroke at the McKay lab. Upon his return to Israel in 2005 he continued his research on stem cells in stroke. He also established and directs the stroke center at Hadassah. Prof. Leker has published over 130 research papers and serves on the editorial board of several international journals. He is a member of a number of academic societies and a fellow of the American Stroke Association and the American Heart Association.

Dr. Mauro Maccarrone obtained a doctorate (PhD) in Biochemistry from University of L’Aquila and Tor Vergata University of Rome (Italy), and a doctorate (PhD) in Bio-Organic Chemistry from Utrecht University (The Netherlands). Currently he is Professor and Chair of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the Department of Medicine of Campus Bio-Medico University of Rome, and Director of the Lipid Neurochemistry Laboratory at the European Center for Brain Research – Santa Lucia Foundation in Rome. He has organized as Chair the 2015 Gordon Research Conference on “Cannabinoid Function in the CNS”, has published more than 430 full papers, and is a named inventor of 5 international patents.
Dr. Maccarrone is a member of the the Editorial Advisory Board of the journals “Current Neurovascular Research” (since 2006) and “Current Medicinal Chemistry” (since 2008), both published by Bentham Science Publishers.

He has been active at the Goethe-University (Frankfurt- Germany) since 1996, first as a researcher and later as University Lecturer at the department of Anatomy. A particular focus is on endogenous mechanisms of neuroprotection and autophagy.
