This review analyzes the fine structure of Trypanosoma cruzi as visualized by various
morphological techniques, including scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron
microscopy of thin sections and freeze-fracture replicas, and atomic force microscopy. Data
obtained using cytochemistry and immunocytochemistry are also discussed. Various structures,
such as the glycocalyx, plasma membrane, flagellar pocket, cytoskeleton, flagellum, kinetoplastmitochondrion
complex, glycosome, acidocalcisome, lipid bodies, contractile vacuole, secretory
pathway, endocytic pathway and nucleus, are covered.
