This chapter offers a comprehensive review of the phytochemical
constituents and pharmacological potential of Tinospora species. The lianas and small
trees of the Tinospora genus are currently utilized in Ayurveda and traditional medicine
for various applications. This review aims to examine the chemical constituents of
Tinospora, isolation techniques, and pharmacological and therapeutic relevance, with a
focus on bioactive compounds and diverse pharmacological activities. The key
bioactive classes identified in Tinospora possess significant medicinal value. The
present work emphasizes the techniques used to isolate and chemically characterize
these compounds through chromatographic (e.g., HPLC, GC-MS) or spectroscopic
(e.g., NMR, IR) methods. It also provides comprehensive information on
pharmacological functions, such as anti-inflammatory, immunomodulatory,
antidiabetic, antioxidant, and hepatoprotective effects. Additionally, this review
discusses the current and prospective clinical uses, toxicity profiles, and potential
future investigations of Tinospora-derived drugs. This review endeavors to present an
extensive literature review of existing Tinospora research, aiming to bridge traditional
ethnomedicinal knowledge with modern pharmacological validation and explore its
pharmacological importance and potency based on existing scientific literature.
