Tourism and hospitality are crucial to economic growth, job creation, and
cultural exchange. However, its rapid expansion often comes at a significant
environmental and social cost, raising concerns about long-term sustainability. This
chapter explores the industry's balance between growth and sustainability, emphasising
eco-friendly infrastructure, responsible resource management, and community
engagement. While tourism can boost local economies, it may also exacerbate income
inequality, particularly in developing regions. To ensure inclusive growth, we propose
strategies for equitable benefit distribution. Collaboration among governments,
businesses, and communities is essential in adopting sustainable practices that mitigate
environmental harm while fostering economic prosperity. Through case studies and
practical examples, we highlight successful models of sustainable development. This
chapter underscores the urgency of addressing tourism’s challenges and provides
actionable recommendations to achieve a harmonious coexistence of growth and
sustainability.
