Abstract

This article focuses on efforts that are being made by the South African
government in ensuring the country’s readiness for sustainable development through
green economy. In this paper, we examine various legislative frameworks, policies and
programmes directed at making the country green economy-oriented. Although the
country has established and executed many programmes in this direction, we conclude
that more actions, including enlightenment campaigns by the provincial and municipal
governments, are still needed to provide a better understanding of the significance of
the green economy to the entire citizenry. Higher education institutions also have
critical roles to play in ensuring a greater understanding of the impact of the green
economy. The greater commitment of resources by the national, provincial and
municipal governments is also necessary for achieving the goal of a green economy for
sustainable development in South Africa.
