An understanding of the anatomy and physiology of Waldeyer’s tonsillar
ring is important to learning as how to diagnose and treat diseases in the upper
aerodigestive tract. The physician should have an understanding of the many disease
processes that can affect this region and how to treat them. The clinician should be
aware of the possible complications of diseases in Waldeyer’s ring and the common
presentations so these can be recognized and immediate treatment can be initiated. The
physician should be knowledgeable of the current indications for tonsillectomy and
adenoidectomy and be aware of the potential complications during the postoperative
course.
